Epidural Injections

An epidural injection is a process that involves introducing a medicine around the spinal cord. If you suffer from chronic lower back pain, this pain treatment option may be exactly what you need. Our doctors will begin by applying a local skin anesthetic to the injection site. Next, we will use a sophisticated, state-of-the-art imaging technology known as fluoroscopy to accurately target the source of your pain. This device enables us to confirm the precise needle placement. Finally, we will inject the corticosteroid anti-inflammatory medicine between the dura – a membrane surrounding nerve roots – and your spinal canal’s interior surface. This effectively reduces swelling around nerve roots, which relieves pressure and pain.

Most of our patients receive three epidural injections for optimum results. Each epidural injection at our clinics in Crofton and Odenton, MD takes roughly 30 minutes to complete, including preparation time. After the process is finished, we will observe you for a short period before permitting you to return to your regular activities. Each of the three injections must be done within a six-month time frame, but we typically schedule them no more than three weeks apart. For patients with extreme pain, we may recommend more than three injections.
